What is Matcha?

Matcha is finely ground powder from green tea leaves that have been specifically grown for matcha.  The powder is whisked in hot water making a rich and frothy drink.

It’s not to be confused with green tea leaves or green tea powder which are ground up leaves of any green tea producing a powder tasting very different than matcha.

Matcha green tea has a deep rich and earthy taste with a hint of sweetness while green tea leaves or green tea powder has a lighter, bitter flavor.

Traditionally, matcha is consumed without any additives or sweeteners.  However, you can add sugar, honey or any preferred sweetener to your liking.

Why is Matcha healthy for you and what are the health benefits?

Matcha powder is high in antioxidants which can help reduce cell damage caused by free radicals.  It is also known to protect against heart disease health, prevent cancer, and promote weight loss.

Matcha leaves are grown specifically in the shade, which produces more theanine and caffeine.

The I-theanine in the tea leaves is what promotes relaxation, reduces stress and improves sleep, as well as boosts concentration and alertness. It can also help with weight loss

The entire process of making matcha takes several weeks, which may explain the hefty price, however, the benefits are undeniable!

How do you correctly make Matcha?

To correctly make matcha add 1-2 tsp of matcha powder into a cup or a small bowl. Then slowly pour about 4 oz of hot water into the cup.  Take a matcha whisk or chasen and whisk until frothy and well combined.   Add the rest of the hot water, give it a stir and enjoy!

What are the different types of matcha?

There are two main matcha tea grades, ceremonial and culinary.

  • Ceremonial Grade – traditionally, the type used for drinking. This premium matcha has a vibrant green color and is made from the youngest tea leaves.
  • Culinary Matcha – a lower quality matcha used for cooking and baking.

Ceremonial grade matcha is very pricey and because of this, it is perfectly fine to use culinary grade for drinking as well.
