What are the different types of dumplings – dumplings, mandu, gyoza, and potstickers?

Dumplings, mandu, gyoza, and potstickers are all delicious variations of Asian dumpling dishes. While they share similarities in their use of a meat-filled wrapper, each type has its own unique characteristics and preparation methods.

  • Dumplings – Chinese origin and use beef, pork and seafood meat mixture with vegetables. Prepared by steaming or boiling.
  • Mandu – Korean origin and use pork mixture with vegetables. Prepared by pan frying or deep frying.
  • Gyoza – Japanese origin and uses a pork mixture with various vegetables. Prepared by steaming in a frying pan and searing the bottom.

How long do you air fry dumplings?

Dumplings can be air fried for approximately 16-20 minutes at a temperature of 360°F (180°C) or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

Cooking times may vary depending on the size and thickness of the dumplings, so it’s recommended to check for doneness by testing the internal temperature or until the dumplings turn golden brown and crispy on the outside.

What ingredients do I need to make air fryer dumplings?

  • Ground Pork – preferred with greater than 20% fat content.
  • Dried Shiitake Mushroom – purchased in a package at an Asian grocery store. Place in warm water to rehydrate and chop.
  • Panko – use your preferred panko of choice. Bread panko for a regular diet and pork panko for a low-carb diet.
  • Cabbage – fresh and chopped.
  • Garlic – freshly grated garlic.
  • Ginger – freshly grated ginger.
  • Green Onion – fresh and chopped.
  • Toasted Sesame Oil – toasted 100% sesame seed oil that should have a dark brown color.
  • Soy Sauce – low sodium preferred. Can also use tamari for gluten-free and coconut aminos for keto.
  • Half & Half – also known as half cream in other parts of the world. Can also use cream or milk if preferred. We do not recommend using plant-based milk as it will create an acidic taste when cooked.
  • Egg – white or brown eggs, beaten.
  • Japanese Sake – typically will come in a large bottle labeled junmai sake. Can also substitute with dry sherry wine or Chinese cooking wine.
  • Salt – sea salt preferred.
  • Black Pepper – ground.
  • Cream Cheese – use block cream cheese and not spread. To soften quickly, place in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.
  • Distilled White Vinegar – store brought distilled white vinegar.

  1. hi this looks so yummy! I need clarification on your servings. is it 10 dumplings are serving or there are 10 servings in this recipe. It’s a bit confusing as you list the calories right underneath the servings making it appear to me that a serving is 10 dumplings. thank you so much for your time!

    • LowCarbingAsian

Hi Ana! The recipe makes 10 servings of dumplings, and the serving size would be around 3-5 dumplings. Hope that helps.

  2. Hi,

I do not gave an air fryer, how can I make this recipe in the oven?

    • LowCarbingAsian

You can try to bake with convection in the oven following the same directions. Will work, but the crust might not be as crispy.
