Who doesn’t love hot dogs? Ok, I’m sure there’re people out there, but I’m definitely not one of them! 

Growing up in the US, hot dogs were a way of life!  At school, parties, barbecues, there’s always hot dogs being served. 

But after going low carb for the past few years, it’s been a sad transition to have to only eat the hot dog without the bun.

Recently, my two year old son has become obsessed with hot dogs.  Every time I ask him what he wants to eat, it’s “hot dogs”!  

When he wakes up, his first words are “hot dog”.  So, I’ve recently always had them in my fridge.

This is how I became inspired to make a low-carb/keto pigs in a blanket or what we call the cheese dog because, well, the dough is mainly made out of cheese! 

This means that it is much more flavorful than the original recipe.  Winning!

For the hot dogs, I prefer uncured grass-fed all beef polish sausages that are nitrate-free but any type of hot dog or polish type sausage can be used for this recipe. 

That paired with some Sugar Free Ketchup as a dipping sauce is just ‘get in my belly’!

For this recipe, the special ingredients you would need is Almond Flour, optional Toasted Sesame Seed and optional Sugar Free Ketchup, which can be purchased on Amazon or a local specialty supermarket.

1) Gather all ingredients.

2) Preheat oven to 350F and line baking sheet with silicone baking mat (parchment paper works as well).

3) Cut hot dogs in half and set aside.

4) Combine Almond Flour, Baking Powder, salt, garlic powder and onion powder in a bowl. Mix well and set aside.

5) In a different large microwavable bowl, add shredded mozzarella and cream cheese.  Microwave for 30-45 seconds, take out and stir, then microwave for 30-45 more seconds and stir again. Continue this process until the cheese is completely melted.

6) Add the Almond Flour mixture into the cheese bowl while still warm, quickly knead with hands until dough like consistency and everything is fully combined.  If dough cools too much just microwave for a few seconds, take out and knead again.

7) Separate dough into 6 equal parts, take one part and form a ball.   Next, flatten out the ball with the palm of your hand, wrap it around the hot dog and place onto a silicone baking mat.  Repeat until all the mix is used.

8) Beat egg in a bowl, gently brush onto buns (egg wash), and then sprinkle on optional Toasted Sesame Seed.

9) Bake for 19-21 minutes, until buns are firm and slightly golden brown.  Serve with optional dipping Sugar Free Ketchup and enjoy warm!
