Keto Low Carb Green Onion Cheese Rolls

These green onion keto cheese rolls are exploding with cheesy, oniony flavors that’ll leave your carb cravings satisfied!

Coming from a Taiwanese background, I grew up eating a lot of bakery baked breads similar to the ones you find at 85 degrees bakery.

One of my favorites that I remember eating was the green onion bread because I just loved how the green onions gave the bread such a wonderful flavor and aroma.

I have to be honest, I haven’t even stepped inside a bakery in years!  I just try to stay away from the temptation altogether.

It wasn’t until recently that I became inspired to really challenge myself and try making bread type recipes for LCA.  The idea just seemed so daunting.

But like all our recipes that we make, they always come from cravings for foods that aren’t necessarily low-carb/keto.

To be honest though, I’m a lazy baker and the idea of using yeast and waiting for the bread to rise for me is a big ‘no thank you’!

So when I suddenly got a craving for green onion bread, I had the idea to use our cheese bread base and somehow turn that into an onion bread.

After multiple tries, lots of cheese, Almond Flour and green onions, we came up with an amazing green onion bread alternative that we call our green onion cheese rolls.

Keep in mind if you’re expecting these rolls to be soft, fluffy with that bread pull, this isn’t it.

This is a low-carb/keto, wheat and gluten-free bread roll that’s made entirely out of cheese and Almond Flour.  So it won’t achieve the same textures of bread made from gluten and wheat.

However, what you’ll get is a bread roll that’s slightly denser but full, and I mean full of amazing flavors and will satisfy your carb cravings!  Plus these rolls are dense, so they’re ultra filling and one little roll goes a long way!

I recommend eating these rolls warm.  They’ll become denser as they cool but warming them up in the microwave for a few seconds will make them soft again.

For this recipe, the special ingredients you would need is Almond Flour, which can be purchased on Amazon or a local specialty supermarket.

Now if you’re ready, let’s get going!

Servings 6 Rolls

Ingredients

  • 3/4 Cup Almond Flour
  • 1/2 tbsp Baking Powder
  • 2 oz Cream Cheese
  • 1 1/4 Cups Pre-Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • 1 Cup Chopped Green Onion (about 3 Stalks Green Onions)
  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 Egg (Egg Wash)

Directions

1) Gather all ingredients.

2) Preheat oven to 350F and line baking sheet with silicone baking mat (parchment paper works as well).

3) Chop green onions and set aside.

4) In a small Teflon frying pan, add butter on medium-low heat until melted.  Once melted, add in chopped green onions, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.  Cook for 2-3 minutes until tender and then remove from heat.

5) Combine Almond Flour and Baking Powder in a bowl. Mix well and set aside.

6) In a different large microwavable bowl, add shredded mozzarella and cream cheese.  Microwave for 30-45 seconds, take out and stir, then microwave for 30-45 more seconds and stir again. Continue this process until the cheese is completely melted.

7) Add the Almond Flour mixture into the cheese bowl while still warm, quickly knead with hands until dough like consistency and everything is fully combined.  If dough cools too much just microwave for a few seconds, take out and knead again.

8) Combine cooked green onions with cheese roll mix.  Once combined, separate into 6 equal parts, form buns and place onto a silicone baking mat.  Repeat until all the mix is used.

9) Beat egg in a bowl and gently brush onto buns (egg wash).

10) Bake for 15-17 minutes, until buns are firm and slightly golden brown.  Enjoy warm!
