Keto Sour Cream Garlic & Onion Dip


I love chips and dips!  But aiming to be low carb/keto, it was something that we had to replace.  So eventually, our go-to snack became pork rinds with plain sour cream.

As I was eating this combination the other day, I wondered what would happen if we gave this combination a little more flavor – a little more flavor by adding some garlic and caramelized onion into the sour cream and bam!  Our low carb/keto sour cream garlic & onion dip was born!

This sour cream garlic & onion dip is seriously an addicting  CrackDip!  Remember back in the days, the Pringles potato chip slogan was ‘once you pop, you can’t stop’?  Well, for this dip, ‘once you dip, you won’t quit’!

It’s creamy, garlicky and sweet from the onions and all that leads to one delish dip!

This goes very well with Pork Rinds, but it really can be used for anything really.  All while being very low-carb/keto at ~5g net carbs per serving!

And to make it isn’t all that hard either!  We start by using the oil and butter to caramelizes the onions and bring out the natural sweetness, then add garlic to provide the depth of the dip. 

From there, we let it cool down and mix it in with some sour cream and Kewpie Mayo topped with some green onions and there you go, you have yourself some homemade sour cream garlic & onion dip that’s seriously good!

Also note we have had our dip hold in the fridge for up to 7 days before, so definitely something you can make in batches!

For this dish, the only special ingredients you would need is Kewpie Mayo, which you can pick up on Amazon or a local Asian supermarket.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Diced Onion (about 1/4 of a large onion)
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • 1/8 tsp Salt
  • 8 oz Sour Cream (1 Cup)
  • 2 Garlic Cloves
  • 4 tbsp Kewpie Mayo
  • 1 Stalk Green Onion
  • 3oz Pork Rinds (optional)

Directions

1) Gather all the ingredients.

2) Finely dice 1/4 of a large onion.  You should end up with around 1 cup of loosely chopped onions.

3) In a medium Teflon fry pan, add olive oil and chopped onions.   Cook on medium heat until fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.

4) After 2-3 minutes has passed, add butter and lower heat to medium low.  Sprinkle salt and mix together.  Cook for 15 minutes to caramelize onions mixing occasionally.

5) In the meantime, finely mince garlic and chop green onion and set aside.

6) After 15 minutes have passed, combine garlic into a medium Teflon fry pan with caramelized onion.  Stir well and cook for 5 more minutes.

7) After 5 minutes, transfer caramelized garlic onion to a bowl and place inside a freezer for 5 minutes (to cool-down).

8) After 5 minutes, in a large mixing bowl, combine sour cream, Kewpie Mayo, green onions, caramelized onion mix and mix well.  Transfer to a serving bowl.

9) Serve with optional Pork Rinds or vegetable sticks of your choice.
