Highball Whiskey Soda

This highball whiskey isn’t anything new, in fact, it has been around long before I was born.  However, I seldom see whiskey being served this way in the States.

I only found out about it because it became ‘the way’ to drink whiskey over in Japan.  The last time I went there (back in 2011), I remember being at a business dinner and everybody was ordering one.

So being open minded to all kinds of alcoholic drinks, I ordered one.  Soon thereafter, this became my preferred method of drinking ‘everyday’ whiskey.

Highball whiskey is just whiskey split with carbonated water, also known as a whiskey soda.  The aspect I like about this style is the effervescence effect and how it creates a new character to the drink.

Another upside is that sometimes I forget to drink enough water (water reduces the morning whiskey headaches), so adding carbonated water will ensure I stay hydrated. Now, who wouldn’t want a hangover insurance?

Since whiskey is distilled, it has 0 carbs!

As I often state, I am a big fan of whiskey glasses.  I just really enjoy getting all the notes out of anything I drink and to accomplish that, you will need the proper glassware.

So if you are a fan of wine, beer, whiskey or cocktails, you may want to consider the correct glassware because in my opinion, they really do make a huge difference!

Lastly, for these directions, we will be using a Sodastream to provide the carbonated water.  I prefer this method because 1) it is cheaper than buying pre-packed carbonated water 2) the effervescence effect is much stronger since it is ‘freshly’ bottled.  However, you can use pre-bottled carbonated water as well!

Now, let’s get started!

Ingredients

  • Bottle of Favorite Whiskey
  • 1 Cold Bottle of Water
  • 1 Can / Bottle of Carbonated Water

Directions

1) Gather all the ingredients.

2) Pour COLD water of choice into Sodastream bottle (cold otherwise your whiskey is going to be warm and bubbles + warm isn’t very good).

3) Place SodaStream bottle into the mouth of the SodaStream device and push in to lock it into place.

4) Press down on SodaStream device to add carbonation.  The one we have has 3 lights with each light representing the amount of carbonation being added.  I prefer 1 light, but the choice is up to you.

5) Pour your choice of whiskey into a whiskey glass.

6) Pour your SodaStream carbonated water into whiskey glass.  Parts are personal preference, but I usually do around a 2 parts whiskey to 1 part carbonated water. Serve with a snack of choice (today I elected some macadamia nuts).

All done! Cheers and stay safe!
