Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Heavy Cream – heavy whipping cream or double cream in UK.
  • Matcha Powder – green tea leaves that have been ground into a powder. Culinary grade Matcha Powder will work for this recipe but you can also use ceremonial grade premium matcha if preferred.
  • Sweetener – use sugar or your preferred sweetener.
  • Vanilla Extract – concentrated flavors of Vanilla found in baking section of grocery stores.

🍵 Matcha Note

Use Culinary Grade Matcha. It offers great taste at a more affordable price than ceremonial matcha.

Essential Kitchen Equipment

Directions

Step 1 Prepare the ice cream mixture by combing cream, sweetener, matcha powder, and vanilla extract in a mason jar, giving a quick whisk, closing the lid and shaking the mason jar for 3-5 minutes. You will know when are done because the mixture will almost double in volume.

🌀 Mixing Pro Tip

A helpful tip to streamline the process is to Utilize a Frother to aerate the cream. This technique reduces the amount of shaking required, making it easier to achieve the desired creamy texture.

Step 2 Then throw it in the freezer for 3-4 hours and wait until you have ice cream.

🧊 Freezing Pro Tip

To ensure ideal serving consistency, Freeze for 3-4 Hours. Prolonged freezing can lead to a firmer texture, necessitating defrosting prior to scooping.

Recipe Variations

If you’re craving a fruity twist, swap out the matcha for strawberries and incorporate either some of my Baking Strawberry Powder or Strawberry Reduction Sauce for a delightful variation. This transforms the recipe into your very own mason jar Strawberry Milk Ice Cream!

Pairing Recommendations

To enhance your matcha ice cream, top it with our homemade Matcha Condensed Milk for added sweetness and creamy texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to shake the mason jar continuously while freezing?

No, you don't need to shake the mason jar continuously while freezing. Once you've placed it in the freezer, simply wait for 3-4 hours for the ice cream mixture to harden.

Can I use an alternative to a mason jar for making this ice cream?

Yes, you can use any jar with a lid, but a mason jar is the best choice due to its size and availability.

How can I adjust the sweetness level of the ice cream?

To adjust the sweetness level of the ice cream, simply add more or less sweetness depending on your preference.

Storage Tips

I recommended to consume the ice cream in one serving to maintain its creamy texture, as refreezing can result in a harder consistency. If you choose to freeze any leftovers, keep in mind that defrosting will be necessary before scooping.

Hey Tammy! Awesome and hope it turns out well for you! Just a quick suggestion, it’s best after about 3-4 hours in the freezer. If you leave it overnight, it will get really hard and you’ll have to end up defrosting it.

  6. Could I replace this with coconut milk/cream? I’m lactose intolerant

    • LowCarbingAsian

Hey Tiffany! We never tried, so not 100% sure but I think it might work. The consistency between the creams are similar and the whole idea of the mason jar ice cream is to aerate the cream to form the texture of ice cream. So I’d think they would aerate to similar textures! Hope it works out!
