How to make Sweet Japanese Sty BBQ Beef n’ Broccoli?

Directions

  1. Prepare the Japanese yakisoba sauce, combine soy sauce, sweetener, oyster sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, preferred thickener, and white pepper in a mixing bowl.
  2. In a large skillet or wok, heat cooking oil and add broccoli florets, cooking for 1 minute until slightly tender, before transferring it to a holding bowl.
  3. Brown the sliced round beef steak for 1 minute, then add back the broccoli and pour in the BBQ sauce mixture, cooking until the broccoli is tender.
  4. Finish with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds and bonito flakes.

  • Round Steak – sliced pieces of round beef steak, can also use sirloin and flank steak.
  • Salt – sea salt preferred.
  • Broccoli – freshly chopped broccoli.
  • Neutral Oil no taste or flavor with high cooking temperature. Some choices are sunflower oil, peanut oil, sallower oil, vegetable oil, and canola oil. 
  • Toasted Sesame Seeds – optional garnish.
  • Bonito Flakes – made from shaved Dried Bonito fish. Commonly used to make broth and responsible for giving Japanese cuisine that signature umami flavor. Can replace with Hondashi.
  • Sweetener use your preferred sweetener.
  • Soy Sauce – low-sodium Soy Sauce preferred. Can also use tamari for gluten-free.
  • Oyster Sauce – sauce made from oyster extracts, found at grocery stores.
  • Ketchup – regular ketchup. Can use Sugar Free Ketchup for a low-carb sauce.
  • Worcestershire Sauce Worcestershire Sauce packed in a bottle. Found in grocery stores.
  • White Pepper – ground White Pepper in a bottle.
  • Thickener – corn starch slurry, Xanthan Gum for low carb, or thickener of choice.

What Beef to Use

Round eye is what is traditional used, but you can also use flank and sirloin.

  • 1 tsp Toasted Sesame Seed optional topping

  • Gather all the ingredients.

  • Combine and mix all ingredients for sauce – sweetener, Soy Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Sugar-Free Ketchup, Worcestershire Sauce, White Pepper and Xanthan Gum. Set aside.

  • Pat down the round steak with a paper towel then slice steaks into 1/2 inch thick strips, sprinkle salt and set aside.

  • Wash, cut broccoli into bite size pieces and set aside.

  • In a large frying pan, add cooking oil and bring up to temperature over high heat. Once the oil is preheated, carefully add broccoli, stir well and cook for 1 minute. Once 1 minute has passed, remove broccoli and set on a holding plate.

  • Add beef into the same large frying pan and cook on high heat for 1-1.5 minutes or until slightly browned.

  • After beef is browned, add back in the broccoli and pour sauce into the large frying pan. Mix well, cook for an additional 1-2 minute or until desired broccoli tenderness is reached. Transfer to serving plate and sprinkle optional Toasted Sesame Seed and Bonito Flakes.

  2. Thank you so much for the lovely recipe! Do you think it would turn out okay if made without the oyster sauce? I’m a bit stricter on my carb count but I’m worried it might ruin the taste.
